Cousin and her Cat

Artist statement: For my artwork I was inspired by the paintings of Gustav Klimpt and the poster designs of Alphonse Mucha. I was also influenced by their use of patterns and how they became part of the painting rather than separate. I also drew inspiration from this, using the natural forms I studied to develop into the patterns I used in the background of my work. I chose a photograph of my cousin for my portrait; however, it was not until later when I researched Gustav Klimpt that I found a similar image of Klimpt holding a cat. I decided to go ahead with this pose as I thought it a great acknowledgement to his work.
I used acrylic paints and the use of yellow with gold to portray the bold colours of nature and to emphasise the patterns in the background and used more muted to colours to depict a realistic portrait of my cousin.”
