Artist statement: In my piece, The Starved Scourge, I tried to create an unsettling and unnerving mood related to the beast and it’s environment. Overall, it follows a basic anatomical structure, aside from the oddly placed eyes and mouths which help create the unnatural feeling. By using digital art as my medium, I had full control over the colour scheme and was able to create a very smooth piece compared to what other mediums would have achieved. It was inspired by Patricia Piccinini, taking on her strange, unique style where she creates disturbing, even grotesque, imagery by taking what’s familiar and twisting it. I took familiar subjects – an owl, a typical western dragon and a ram’s skull, and changed them in ways that would appear unsettling.
