The Nature of Cities

Artist statement: My work, The Nature of Cities explores the concept of urbanisation and how it drastically, and destructively, changed the natural environment. This destructive nature of humanity and the consequences for our natural world is at the forefront of both political and social discussion, and I attempted to create a physical representation of”reverse urbanisation”. My intent is to show nature reclaiming and overpowering our destructive force, and pay respect the incredible power of the natural forces at work around us. I have considered the work of Andy Goldsworthy and through my own process placed my small scale city sculpture in a series of local landscapes at varied times of the day. The organic textures, colours and forms contrast against the steel hardedge buildings. Like Goldsworthy, I used photography to document this process and bring it back into the gallery space for exhibition.
